FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I find a walk in….?
If there isn’t a walk in the place you want to visit, it either means:

There weren’t enough waypoints on the route
The aim of our site is to guide you to nice places for walking that you can reach by bus or train. The waypoints and routes are just suggestions – we recommend you use them as a guide, and explore your own exact route for the day!

The walk I went on didn’t match the description on your website
Sorry to hear that. We rely on our users sending in accurate and up to date information but, unfortunately, we cannot check each walk submitted to the site, much as we would like to. You can comment on the rogue walk (if you are registered) and point out what was wrong.

The distance of the walk given on your website was entirely wrong
The distance for each walk is calculated by drawing a fictious straight line from waypoint to waypoint of the walk - like the crow flies. That, by definition, is not accurate, as any given walk rarely resembles a straight line (unless you're a crow, in which case it would a fly rather than a walk). It's also why we've added "Roughly" before we give the distance.

I can’t use the maps on your website for walking – why don’t you use Ordnance Survey maps?
Because if we supplied these we would have to charge people to use our site, and we don’t want to do that. We are aiming to promote Car Free Walking, rather than make money as a walking service. We also assume that many people will either have a map for the region, or borrow one. Walking people like taking maps with them. And flasks.

There weren’t enough waypoints on the route
We don’t demand a certain number of waypoints, or a certain amount of detail for a route. The aim of our site is to guide you to nice places for walking that you can reach by bus or train. The waypoints and routes are just suggestions – we recommend you use them as a guide, and explore your own exact route for the day!

You promote Car Free Walking, but there are adverts for car companies on your site
We decided we would need some form of advertising from the site to cover the running costs, because we do not charge people to view or download our walks. And, as we say elsewhere, we do not necessarily endorse any of our advertisers.
We do, however, want to stop car companies from advertising on our site, so if you spot one, send us their web address and we add them to our filter to stop them getting on again.

Your website is great – who designed it?
forob (that’s for you as well, not just for Rob). Do contact them if you want to use their services.

Your site is great – I would like to support your work
Why thank you. We are not a registered charity, so we cannot accept donations without all sorts of taxes and legal wrangling and Bob Geldorf concerts. However, if you would like to sponsor us, check out our sponsors page. If you don’t have a logo or a website to link from here, we can put your name and a picture of you walking or something. A bit like they do for footballer’s shirts in matchday programmes.
