A cross-valley walk - Buttermere to Seatoller Duration: Full day Type: Mountain (above 600m)
From March to October, the extensive Lake District bus network opens up (almost) all corners of the park to walkers. While it is easy to head up the famous peaks, the real joy is found in starting in one valley, getting up high and finishing somewhere else. This route is a classic - from Buttermere, head over Red Pike, High Stile, Hay Stacks and Great Gable before finishing in Seatoller. With most of the day spent up high, there's no better way to explore the western fells....more >

Sharp Tor - a south Dartmoor walk Duration: Full day Type: Moorland
This walk takes in some of the southerly tops of Dartmoor. Starting with a riverside section, the route heads onto the higher ground at Avon Dam, then crosses the tops along Sharp Tor to Butterdon Hill. As always with Dartmoor, it's pretty wild out there, so come prepared!...more >

The northern fells - Great Calva, Knott and Carrock Fell Duration: Multi-day Type: Mountain (above 600m)
To be declared a fully-fledged Lake District expert, you need to spend at least a couple of days wandering around the oft-overlooked northern fells - Great Calva, Knott, Carrock Fell and their surrounding tops. Buses are sparse round here, so you will have to wander in and out from the south-eastern corner. There is good accommodation in Hesket Newmarket or Caldbeck to the north. It's also prime wild camping territory for those who prefer to sleep under canvas. NB: you need OS OL5 as well....more >

Glaramara from Seatoller Duration: Half day Type: Mountain (above 600m)
From April to October, the Borrowdale Rambler bus runs between Keswick and Seatoller, opening up a whole host of walks in the towering western fells. This route, over Rosthwaite Fell to Glaramara, ranks as one of the finest. From the village, it's a sharp climb up via Combe Gill, before a couple of wonderful hours up high and a simple descent to Seathwaite and back out. There's so much to do around Seatoller that you should really make at least a weekend of it....more >

Yeoford to Copplestone - along the Tarka Line Duration: Stroll (1-2 hours) Type: Countryside
The Tarka Line, from Exeter to Barnstaple, passes through some beautiful Devonian scenery. Excellent walks start from all the rural stops in between, and the 'Tarka Line Walks' booklet details 22 routes. Order a copy from www.tarkarail.org/page2.html This route, between the villages of Yeoford and Copplestone, passes through the mid-Devon redlands that are typical of the region.
