The heart of the Lakes - High Seat and Ullscarf
Duration: Full day Type: Mountain (above 600m) This route heads right through the heart of the Lakes. Starting from Keswick, you climb onto a ridge running north to south across many of the Central Fells - Bleaberry Fell, High Seat and Ullscarf. You then drop down into Grasmere (which has regular buses to Keswick). The route is ideal for peak-spotters - you traipse past the 'back' of the Hellvellyn group (i.e. the side no one ever goes up) and several of the Western Fells are also visible on clear days. Beware - it gets boggy on top....more > A walk through Lochaber
Duration: Full day Type: Low hills and fells (below 600m) Lochaber, in the West Highlands, is one of Scotland's finest walking regions. This route takes you through some of the lower hills south of Loch Morar. The route described here heads from Lochailort Station to the shore of Loch Morar, then returns the way you walked in, but the area lends itself to exploring and picking your own route across the hills. Good boots, gaiters and a map and compass all required! This walk comes courtesy of the Information Centre in Arisaig - thanks!...more > The lost village of Peanmeanach
Duration: Full day Type: Low hills and fells (below 600m) The Ardnish peninsula is a great place to explore. Start your walk from Lochailort Station, and after a short walk along the road you are deep in the heart of a typically Scottish environment - a soggy mix of lochs, forest, bogs and beaches, and the curious ruins around Peanmeanach bothy at the far end. There's a clear path in on the northern side of the peninsula, but navigating across the southern side on the way in makes for a more varied day....more > Carn a' Mhadaidh-ruidh - a route around Lochaber
Duration: Full day Type: Low hills and fells (below 600m) The hills of Lochaber offer some fantastic low-level walking. This route follows a rough track past lochans and crags to the summit of Carn a' Mhadaidh-ruidh. From there, it heads to the shores of Loch Morar before returning to Arisaig. It's a lonely old spot - perfect for a day away from it all. Don't be fooled by the lack of height - if the weather turns bad, the surroundings quickly become hard to navigate. But I can guarantee you'll have the hills to yourself, save for the deer....more > Port nam Murrach beach from Arisaig
Duration: Half day Type: Coast This walk takes you to a beautiful beach on Scotland's west coast. Starting from Arisaig, the route follows the coastal road for a couple of miles (don't worry, it's a quiet road) before heading over Cruach Doire an Dobhrain to the beach. It's wonderful low-level scenery with stunning views across to Ardnish and the Rois-Bhein hills. ...more > |
