A leisurely walk (city/town) in North Yorkshire, England, about 6.90km (4.29 mi) long with an estimated walking time of about 1:45h. It is suitable for families with children, but unsuitable for prams & pushchairs, wheelchairs.
A wander around York's wonderful Walls Walkway with a detour to a lovely park. Lovely, easy walk for families including young children. A multitude of public transport makes York an easy visit. Walk is 4.5 miles long but you'll inevitably walk longer as you visit the 'inner city' too. The following is a good guide to the walled walk http://www.yorkwalls.org.uk/Walls_PDF.pdf
Exit the railway station and turn left to pass The Royal Hotel on your left and carry on down Station Road to reach the traffic lights. Turn right to cross the road then left to cross another road.
You will have reached the statue of George Leeman, now turn right and go under the bridge over the road to find steps on the left giving access to the wall walkway.
Micklegate Bar houses a small museum (admission fee) & if open you can walk across the entrance to avoid descending/ascending steps to cross the road. Continue to follow the wall walkway to Bishopgate
Reach steps that descend to Bishopgate Street. At the bottom of the steps take the footpath heading right to the pelican crossing & cross the road. Take the slip road leading to the river, turn right.
Follow the road running along the river bank to Rowntree Park. Explore the park should you wish to as it's well worth it. Leave the park and head downstream for the Millennium Bridge.
At the junction with the River Foss you can follow the Foss on either bank (there are toilets in the car park if you head left) to reach Tower Street by the bridge over the river Foss.
Tower Street is a very busy road & you need to cross it. The safest way is turn right for 100 yards & use the pelican crossings at the junction with Paragon Street.
Once over the pelican crossings turn left back down the road to reach Fishergate Postern Tower where you access the wall walkway once more and continue the walk to Walmgate Bar.
You leave the wall here to follow the River Foss on your left to rejoin the wall just beyond the large road junction (the wall is ahead on the left) at Jewbury.
Monk Bar has a small museum (admmision fee) and the wall continues to circumnavigate the Minster and reach Bootham Bar where it's back to street level for a short period.
Exit the walls and turn left into St Leornard's Place to pass the Theatre Royal and at the traffic lights turn right into Museum Street (a left turn takes you to the Minster).
Followin Museum Street over Lendal Bridge to rejoin the wall walkway which will take you to your starting point on the wall at (3) and retrace your steps to the railway station.
