Waypoints
From the town of Fort William, buy your supplies for an overnight stay and head off with the crowds towards Glen Nevis and Ben Nevis.
You have two choices along the Glen Nevis valley - follow the course of the spectacular River Nevis, or explore the routes in the Nevis Forest.
Find a site to camp somewhere in Glen Nevis (and camp responsibly!). Early next day, cross the footbridge just before the ford in the river.
Follow the path heading up through the woods, towards Sron Sgurr a' Mhaim. This takes you to the first big peak, Sgurr a' Mhaim (sgurr means peak, by the way).
The best bit of the route! Follow the Devil's Ridge to Sgorr an Iubhair, which is a fine scramble. Follow round to Am Bodach, the highest point of the route. On a clear day, the views are breathtaking towards Ben Nevis, and even in cloud, the scrambling is fantastic.
Follow the Ring of Steall ridge round to Stob Coire a' Chairn, enjoying some more scrambles on the way. Carry on to the last summit, An Garbhanach.
Drop off the ridge and head back towards the Glen. You have to cross the Steall Bridge, a wire bridge across the river near the mountain rescue post. Makes a good photo!
After a long walk, you will have earnt a pint or two. The first pub is the Ben Nevis Inn, at the foot of Ben Nevis. They also do accomodation if you are planning to do Ben Nevis the following day. When you do head home, just follow the same route back to Fort William.
