A route that passes near three motorways may not seem ideal as a car-free walk. But this route has plenty to offer: two fascinating bridges across the Severn Estuary, a cliff that's 210 million years old, and, from late autumn onwards, thousands of birds feeding on the estaury mudflats. The route starts at Severn Beach Station, on the train route from Bristol.

From the station, head towards the coast. Follow the coastal path (part of the Severn Way) heading north.

The first bridge you reach is the second Severn Bridge, opened in 1996 to ease traffic on the Severn Bridge further north. You can walk underneath the bridge - the view through the supports makes an interesting photo! There is also a visitor centre nearby: www.severnbridgesvisitorcentre.org.uk

Heading past the small hamlet of Redwick, you cross a small bridge and are onto the banks of the estuary. This is a prime spot for twitchers over the winter months - over 240 different bird species visit these flats! There are some species to see all year round.

Head away from the water's edge to join Passage Road. Don't head up the hill, but follow the water towards Aust Cliff. There is fascinating geology here - some of the four bands of rock on the cliff date back 210 million years! You also get a great view of the Severn Bridge, opened in 1966.

If you want to stay by the estuary, simply head back the same way to Severn Beach. Alternatively, retrace your steps along the path and head up the hill. Walk through the village and cross the A403 into Aust. There is a pub here - The Boar's Head - if you need a pick-me-up!

The road back towards Severn Beach is actually part of the Sustrans National Route Network (number 41). But I'm sure they won't mind sharing it with walkers!
