Exmoor is a place of great diversity; woodland, moors, river valleys, and one of England's finest stretches of coastline, running between Combe Martin in the west and Minehead on the eastern boundary of the National Park. The towns in between make it easy to walk sections of this fabulous coast in a day, with regular buses in between. This walk tackles the long central section from Lynton in Devon to Porlock, across the county boundary in Somerset.

Start at Lynton, a pleasant seaside town with plenty of facilities. Cross two rivers in the town to pick up the South West Coastal Path heading east.
OS Grid SS746497
The SWCP heads around the northern side of Wind Hill, along the top of some of England's steepest cliffs. Carry on to the village of Countisbury, where the path veers northeast towards The Foreland.

At Wheatham Combe, the path splits - one heads through the woods on the cliff, the other gains height and crosses through hilly farmland. Both are enjoyable, but the higher route has the better views over Porlock Bay.

You will sense the end of the walk approaching as you drop down through Yearnor Wood and into Porlock Weir. Take the road through the village, and pick up the footpath at Porlockford Bridge - a nicer route to Porlock than along the road.
