A leisurely walk (riverside) in national park Snowdonia starting and finishing in Gwynedd, Wales, about 8.40km (5.22 mi) long with an estimated walking time of about 3:00h. It is unsuitable for families with children, prams & pushchairs, wheelchairs.
The start of the descent leads to a level section. At the start of the second section of descent, look for a path on the left signed for Beddgelert. At the next junction go right, still descending.
Turn right on the path and follow the east bank of the river in the Aberglaslyn Pass into Beddgelert. Note the extension of the Welsh Highland Railway.
Gelert was a dog whose master left him alone with his baby. On return, master finds baby dead in blood-soaked blanket, assumes dog has killed baby. So kills dog, but later finds body of wolf, realises wolf killed baby and dog killed wolf. A kids' storybook is available in the souvenir shop.
In 2011, the Welsh Highland Railway will extend into Porthmadog. You can either bus it back home, or, take the little train into Porthmadog, with various connections from there.
