This relatively short and undemanding route has fine views over the surrounding mountains and valleys, as well as areas of broadleaf woodland and attractive riverside and lakeside sections. The highlight of the walk, given clear conditions, is the view of the Snowdon horseshoe across Llynau Mymbyr, one of the classic views of North Wales. After dry weather, conditions are perfect, but the area can have heavy rainfall – wear waterproof, high-ankled boots.

Head to the main road junction; look for the war memorial, then the ladder/stile on the left. Cross the road here.
OS Grid SH721581
Climb over to see a half-hidden 19th century Norman-style church. A well constructed rocky path leads uphill across a field to a gap in the wall. Cross the slab bridge beyond, then turn right on the stone causeway and follow to the ladder/stile into the woodland.

Climb over the ladder/stile then follow the woodland path. Keep right at the fork. The path undulates out of the trees, across a bracken-covered slope below Clogwyn-mawr, with views across the Llugwy Valley to Moel Siabod.

Climb the left one, keeping the fence on your right. Follow the slabbed pasture to a new wooden footbridge.

Don't cross the bridge, but rather turn sharply right. Keep the stream and then fence on your left. Cross three slab bridges to see a boundary wall/fence on your left. Descend to the next ladder/stile.

Turn left, and follow the path to a rough lane, then turn left again.

On the rough lane, you pass what looks like a sub station. Ignore the gate; look carefully to see a grassy path. Keep the fence on your left, and the path curves to another ladder/stile. Cross the grassy track, see yet another ladder/stile that heads into woodland. Walk downhill and at fork take the right-hand path, which is covered with slate chips. This goes downhill steeply to a ladder/stile with a school to the right.

Cross the road then turn left, past the Tyn-y-Coed Hotel. You will see an old stagecoach; this road was the main London to Holyhead route, and now the A5 (see also my walk at Corwen). Admire the view of the Pinnacle at the bridge, then cross it and immediately turn right onto a track.

Pass through the gate, then after few paces fork right. You will pass below the cottage. Where the path bends right, look for a foot bridge. Cross this and bear half-left through a field, past an old stone barn on the right. Follow the riverside path upstream to a ladder/stile, then over a narrow gap in the rocks. At the next rocky outcrop, turn left uphill to a fingerpost; turn right, keeping the fence on your right above a steep drop. There's an old lead mine here. Then continue down some steps past Bryn Engan Farm to a major junction.

Turn left; after about 50 yards, fork right downhill on a forestry road. You will see the Plas-y-Brenin outdoors centre on your right. At the path junction, turn right to cross a footbridge up to the main road.

Look over Llynau (Lake) Mymbyr for a classic view: one of the greats of North Wales, the Snowdon Horseshoe. Then turn left, looking for the ladder/stile over the road on the right.

Climb over then walk ahead on a rough field road. At the fork, keep left. Follow the road through two metal gates. Pass a cottage, and a ruined barn. Just before the barn, turn right and right again over a ladder/stile onto a tarred road down to the village.

Another great walk in Snowdonia, once again I hope you enjoyed it. It's worth checking out my photos on Flickr: in the box "popular tags" enter carfreewalks, which should take you directly to my sets.
