Many people take the train all the way to Mallaig, simply because of the journey - it's one of the world's finest, weaving through mountains and glens and alongside lochs as it heads west from Fort William. But once in Mallaig, why not explore a little further? This walk is surprisingly wild, heading over rough moorland from Loch an Nostarie. The tourist information centre in Mallaig has a book of local walks for £2 if you fancy something shorter.

Take the train to the end of the line! Mallaig is at the end of the Iron Road to the Isles. From here, it's either a boat or the train back home. Or a walk, of course.
OS Grid NM675956
Follow the quieter road from the town centre, heading south to Glasnacardoch. Just before this meets the main road, turn left (east) through the houses to pick up the track to the loch.

A well-maintained path leads to Loch an Nostarie. For a simple walk, have a little potter here and then head back the same way. For something more challenging, continue along the loch's northern shore.

You need to hit the right valley to head north from the loch, as there is a large deer fence across a lot of the moorland. Aim for the valley on the most northerly part of the loch and walk up here until you see the steps over the fence.
