This stretch of coast has some of the best sunsets in Britain, with spectacular views across Morecambe Bay to the southern Lake District. Morecambe has a tarnished reputation as a holiday destination, but this walk shows just some of what this loveable old town has to offer.

The station is in the town centre, so the walk starts here (you can also arrive by bus). Head along Central Drive to the seafront.

After exploring the pier, head south along the sea front. There are loads of landmarks - the Eric Morecambe statue, the outdoor pools, and a long sandy beach to enjoy as well. Carry along the Promenade and onto Sandylands.

The path carries on along the seafront, unto the rocky outcrop of Throbshaw point. If you're taking it easy, make a diversion into Heysham for a cup of tea in one of the tea shops. The path may get a little tricky for those with wheelchairs or pushchairs, but there is a road you can take just inland

The seafront path carries on to Half Moon Bay, until you reach the harbour. The train station is located just south of here. You can also see the nuclear power station, which is interesting even if you're not too keen on nuclear power.

Reverse The Route

Excellent suggestion, Mac. My tip would be taking a good long fish and chip break at Morecambe Bay to enjoy the views! But for the transport, you are right it would make more sense to travel to Heysham Port first, then finish at Morecambe where there are much better connections.

The Reverse

Actually I find the reverse a better walk as, on a good day, you have the whole of Morecambe Bay set out in front of you and a staggering outline of the southern Lake District tops in sight for most of the walk, breathless! St Peters Church in Heysham (along the route) is a wonderful sight in early spring when the churchyard has a covering of snowdrops. For transport, there is only one train in each direction per day Mon-Sat. This (2015) arrives from Lancaster/Morecambe at 12.55 and returns at 13.15 ultimately arriving from/departing to, Leeds.
