The walk begins on Long Bridge over the River Severn. 954847. Head to the north side of the river and turn left into Fan Road. As the road rises out of the town, take a right turn into Tan Yr Allt woods. Follow the main path ahead to a willow scultpture, then turn left, finally right onto a track leading to Llanidloes golf club.

At the golf club, follow Glyndwrs Way, until you reach the minor road at 951871. Turn right along the road and the left into the Fan Terrace. This village was once the most productive silver lead mine in Britain. In the last 2 decades much effort has gone into restoring natural habitats and clearing any waste from the former mine site. Look out for former clues of our industrial heritage as you follow the lane and valley past the old school (now a residence) to Manledd uchef. Keep along the valley, enjoying the splendor of Bryn Y Fan until you reach the ford at 923882. Here you have a choice. If you are feeling energetic, shoot up the steep track to enjoy magnificent panoramic views from the summit of Bryn Y Fan. (Although not marked as a public right of way, well behaved walkers are welcomed.)

Once back down from Bryn Y Fan or if you decided to save your energy, walk up to the dam wall at Bwlch y Gle, 922883.The dam was constructed in the 1960's and helps to control flooding further down the Severn. After a photo opportunity of the view of Llyn Clywedog return back along the way you came but veer to the right, following footpaths, to reach the B4518 at the junction north of Dyffryn, 931867. Cross the road, heading down towards Glyn Farm. Glyn Farmhouse is one of the oldest houses in the area and held a prominant position for the meeting of Welsh lords and royalty. As you walk through the farm pick up the yellow minor road leading through Brithdir woods. These woods are native, local provenance trees and are SSI protected. Within the woods are nests of red tree ants, which have been protected too! After 1km, take the right turn at 937860,and follow the track to the footbridge over the Clywedog river.

Cross the footbridge and follow the track up to the junction by Cringoed.Turn left and look out for the next field gate on the right. Go through the gate and head along the path which runs adjacent to Coed Cwmeryr. During May the woodland is filled with bluebells. You are now on the estate of Somerfield House. Drop into the cwm by the bungalow to cross the stream. Head straight up the hillside to reach the track. Take the track, heading to your left. This leads you back to Llanidloes.
