I thought it was about time I showed you why I have liked living, for most of my life, in Colwyn Bay - where this walk starts. I used to work in Llandudno and at various locations along the North Wales coast. Colwyn Bay is central on North Wales coast, and as you can see from my walks on this site, I can go east to the English border, west to Anglesey and Caernarfon, and south down the Conway Valley into Snowdonia. The area has good transport links: Arriva bus routes 5 (Llandudno-Caernarfon), 11 (Rhyl-Chester) and, for this linear walk, 12 (Llandudno-Rhyl). These are the main services with connecting routes into Anglesey, Snowdonia, the Conway Valley, Mold and Wrexham. There are also other local operators which I can use. Colwyn Bay is also on the main London-Holyhead-London railway, with branches into Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, etc.

Ask the bus driver for this stop, which drops you outside Eirias Park. Enter through the gates on the left, and pass the athletics track - home for the next few years to under-20s international rugby, after a successful tournament this year. Pass the leisure centre, which has a swimming pool, a gym, and all dry sports catered for. Look over the pitch and putt course to the boating lake, then go left between the bowling greens. Pass on your left side the indoor tennis courts and outside floodlit tennis courts. At the rear are the steps down to the promenade. To really appreciate this walk, one of my most photographed, search Flickr: click on popular tags, in the box enter 'carfreewalks'; this should take you straight to my sets. Look left to see the path (not the tarmac one, the one above) and through trees on the railway embankment - this will give you a good view of the new watersports complex, due to open in 2013, and the derelict old pier.

Cross over and join the promenade to the next embankment. Try not to walk on the cycle path, part of the North Wales route from Chester to Bangor and Holyhead.

Walking along the top gives a better view of the beach etc. There are plenty of benches to sit and admire the view. Pass the puppet theatre at the other end of the embankment.

If you so wish, turn left opposite to go straight up the road to visit Bryn Euryn Nature Reserve.

Pass the (probably) smallest church in the UK, with individual seating for just 6 people and standing room for 3 at most! I was lucky, it was open when I passed.
