Fairfield Horseshoe from Ambleside (6 votes)Any regular Lakeland walker can tell you that this is one not to miss. A much-loved classic and deservedly so, the walk around the stunning Fairfield Horshoe from Ambleside should be on everyone's to-do list, even if they have already done it! It's a high-level circuit around the tops of the Fairfield group. Height is gained early, meaning it's an unforgettable day among the clouds - hopefully not too many though, as the view down to Windermere is unbeatable!

Troutbeck valley - the first car-free walk! (5 votes)This valley walk in the Lake District was where the idea for Car Free Walks came from! It's a long walk in, and I was on my own, so plenty of time to think, and I had even remembered a notebook! Enjoy one of the Lakes' peaceful, scenic valleys and practise your wild camping skills in this quiet spot (not a description that can be applied to all of the Lake District!)

A walk through history - Ironbridge Gorge (5 votes)Ironbridge Gorge is famous for the eponymous bridge - the first iron bridge in the world - and there's plenty more to see. This region was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and the relics of this bygone age are all around, including the old kilns, furnaces and mine works which once filled the valley with smoke. It's a much more pleasant place these days, but the shadows of history are never far away.
Ironbridge is easily reached by buses from many towns in Shropshire.
