Chester is a picturesque city, and the locals say the best way to see it is from the city wall that circles it. It's one of the best preserved walls in Britain, and the two-mile circuit along the top makes for a great afternoon. You don't need an OS map; instead pick up a walking guide from the Tourist Information Centre.

Start the city wall walk at Eastgate, with its famous clock - said to be the most photographed in Britain after Big Ben. How they can rpove this I don't know, but it is nice.

Near the Northgate is a bookshop actually built into the wall - not a bad place to work! It's called Gildas Books, and well worth half an hour's browsing.
