To get to the start of this section at Reigate Station from London you can take trains from Clapham Junction or East Croydon. As the North Downs Way gets closer to London the density of main roads rises alarmingly. We were surprised to find that, although on this stage there is almost always a background hum of traffic the walk along the Downs can be surprisingly solitary.

On leaving the train station head up Reigate Hill but immediately beyond the level crossing head west along Somers Rd.

2. After 500m turn right up Pilgrims Way, a private road lined with large detached houses.

At the top of this road go straight ahead onto a chalky path that climbs steeply through trees. There is a bench near the top of this stretch giving great views to the South.

Nearing the top of the hill the rutted chalky path detours around a simple stone memorial to a soldier, erected in 1910.

The path crosses a brick-built embankment onto the open downland of Colley Hill. You can dogleg to the top or take a steep short cut across the grass.

Colley Hill turns imperceptibly into Reigate Hill with a memorial to a US aircrew killed in WWII when their B17 crashed into the hillside. Two solid wooden wing tips with a stone memorial between.

Looking North East on a clear day you can glimpse the City of London some 25km away. The hazy group of office towers looks like some mystical ‘shining city’, but in a bowl, rather than on a hill.

The path goes through a NT car park on the edge of Gatton Park, a large landscaped parkland area. You can see a large lake lower down the hill. Part of the park belongs to a boarding school.
