Clougha Pike, overlooking Lancaster, is a great introduction to the Forest of Bowland. This walk starts in the tiny village of Quernmore (a couple of buses leave for here each day from Lancaster) and takes you on to the hill and a brief tour of nearby Grit Fell, before descending to the village of Caton. There are more regular services from Caton, so make sure you end the walk here.

Take the bus from Lancaster to Quernmore. They are fairly irregular, so an alternative for the super-fit is to start from Lancaster University and walk the couple of miles through the countryside to Quernmore.

From Quernmore Post Office, take the road east and the footpath to Rowton Brook Farm. Carry on along Rowton Brook towards the access land around Rowton Brook Fell.
