A walk in two countries! Walking from Kington across to Gladestry will take you from England into Wales, where you can enjoy the views and a pint, before crossing back again. Apart from border hopping, this short walk offers a wonderfully steep hill, a bit of the Offa's Dyke national trail, and a fascinating border town to explore at the end. What more could you want?!

The walk starts in Kington, sitting on the River Arrow. The Offa's Dyke Trail, the Herefordshire Way, and the Mortimer Trail all pass by here - evidence that this is prime walking countryside! From the town centre, head west following signs for the Offa's Dyke path.

The path follows Ridgebourne Road and straight on to Hergest Ridge. This used to be the site of a racecourse in Victorian times. This is mere metres from the Welsh border, so time for English walkers to check they have their passport.

From the first summit of Hergest Ridge, a path leads down the steep slope and up the even steeper slope of Hanter Hill. Parents might like to consider seeing which of their children can run to the top and back the fastest, while they get out the flask.

Back on the Offa's Dyke...head southwest towards the village of Gladestry. The Royal Oak will be happy to serve a pick-me-up before the walk back home.

For a different route back, take the bridleway along the foot of Hergest Ridge. This is over 300m, so the views over the River Arrow valley are still very enjoyable.

The path rejoins the Offa's Dyke just outside Kington, where you can retrace your steps back into the town. The Kington Museum is a good place to spend an hour or two before the bus home - www.kingtonmuseum.co.uk
