This walk starts at one of England's smallest stations - Berney Arms. The facilities may be somewhat lacking - just a platform and small wooden hut - but the location is ideal. You are dropped right in the heart of the Broads, with no village or road about, and from here easy tracks take you to Great Yarmouth, a few miles away. There's also a windmill and pub. The best day for this walk is Sunday, when five trains leave Great Yarmouth for Berney Arms; on other days, it's only two a day.

Get off the train at Berney Arms. It's a request stop in more ways than one. You need to tell the conductor to stop for one, and the station was built after Thomas Trench Berney sold the land to the railway company - on the insistence that a station was built!

Head across the field to the Berney Arms Mill, a 19 century windmill. It wasn't built to mill anything quaintly rustic like corn, but rather cement. Oh well, it's still a lovely spot. Go through the gate towards the riverside path.

Next stop is the Berney Arms Inn, a remote pub beloved of walkers and those exploring the Broads by boat. From here, head northeast along the river into the Nature Reserve.
